I knew there was a special reason why I LOVE the classic movie Dirty Dancing.. its because the movie is an August baby like me! Today, August 21st, the movie turns 25 years old :)
Besides Dirty Dancing being awesome for these three reasons:
A shirtless young Patrick Swayze
Salsa Dancing (my fave)
Ballsy topic: A young dancer (Penny) needs a stand-in (Baby) on a big performance day so she can get an abortion.
The movie is dear to my heart because it reminds me of when I was growing up. I used to stay up late to watch it with my mother while we folded clothes in the living room. It was such a huge part of my upbringing and spending time with my mom, that now when I watch I just get a warm fuzzy feeling inside. :)
Even til this day, when I catch the film on TV I call my mother and tell her to quickly switch to the channel so we can watch the final dancing scene.
Happy Birthday Dirty Dancing! And R.I.P. Patrick Swayze.
P.S. Another reason why the movie is awesome... Jennifer Grey's curly hair... duh!

I was eight years old when the movie came out. I had a friend who had gone to the theater to see it with her older sister...and I was insanely jealous! Foolishly, I asked my mom if she could take me (I had no older siblings) and she said "no way". In consolation, I asked my Dad (they had long been separated at that point) if he could buy the soundrack for me. He did, and it was one of the first pop music LPs (yep, I got it on vinyl record) I remember owning (before that, I only had kiddie records).
ReplyDeleteWhenever it came out on VHS another friend invited me over and we watched it. I was shocked that my mom was so adamant about me not seeing it since there was no nudity, graphic sex or cursing. But yeah, once I saw it, it became one of my all time faves!
